When an event is perceived as stressful and traumatic, its memory is sometimes encoded in such a way that symptoms are generated by conscious or inadvertent recall of the traumatising event. Unfortunately, each time that memory is triggered, the likelihood of it happening again increases too. This sets up a repeating pattern that feels impossible to stop.
